Flamenco y Sol Ensemble: Artistic Director Sol "La Argentinita" (baile/cante), Music Director Cristian Puig (cante/toque), Peter Basil Bogdanos (percussion), Barbara Martinez (cante/baile), and Isabel Del Dia (baile) Tech Services: Staging and Audio Director/Editor: Michael Arginsky Cinematography: Robert Featherstone This site-specific performance was created during Melissa McGill's Artist Residency at Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center in Garrison, NY.Manitoga's central Quarry Pool forms a natural amphitheater where moss-covered alcoves, rock ledges and tranquil waters come to life with exhilarating music, song and dance. The performers of Flamenco y Sol boldly enliven the water's edge upon a stage at the base of Manitoga's waterfall and into the Quarry Pool.
La Medea adapts Euripides’ violent tragedy of savage infanticide, as a Latin-disco-pop variety show. Simultaneously a live dance-theater performance, a made for camera TV musical, and a feature film, the dark-comedy is directed, performed, shot, edited and streamed in real time. Performers and camera operators play the characters, while studio audiences and those tuning in via broadcast act as Greek chorus. The work’s live stream broadcast functions as a mediator between the selective reality of the lens and an exposed “behind-the-scenes” indeterminacy of the soundstage. An inquisition on an archetype, La Medea re-considers the sensational mystification of the “abandoned heroine” as an impossibility. This is not as a portrait of a dangerous foreigner, or an angry oppressed woman or, a hysterical mother, this is a record of our groundless fears of her. Music and libretto by Sam Crawford, set design by Brookhart Jonquil, lighting by Tuce Yasak, and cinematography by Pamela Giaroli. Dancer: Sol "La Argentinita"
